Welcome to The Westerly Links Page

This page was produced in appreciation for the community that I was born and raised in. It contains a little bit of everything that I could find concerning the Town of Westerly, RI on the internet. It was meant for visitors and residents alike. If I have neglected to include your site, please e-mail me at the bottom of the page and I will add you to the list. Now kick back and enjoy "Our Town".

A Bit of History: Westerly has long been a host to travelers from around the globe. The first visitors to this seaside community were believed to be Dutch fur traders in the early 1600's. In 1614, Adrian Block, aboard the Restless, explored the area extensively. From his journals, the first map of the area was created by geographer De Leat.

In 1642, the first known white settlers, John Babcock and Mary Lawton, landed at Mastuxet Brookafter fleeing from Newport, RI. They fled from the opposition of their marriage by their parents. John and Mary gave birth to James Babcock, the first white child born in Westerly.

Many fought for the opportunity to claim Westerly as their own. Indian tribes in the area argued over the territory. Massachusetts tried to claim the area several times as did Connecticut in 1662. Despite all efforts by others to claim the land for their own, it was sold in 1660 by Chief Sosoa to the settlers in the area. In 1661, the Articles of Agreement were established and the land from Weekapaug to the Pawcatuck River northward to Quequatuck, was held in six shares. In 1661 the first settlers of the town of Westerly began to appear. In 1663, Westerly became the fifth organized colony af the State of Rhode Island under the New Colonial Charter. In 1669, there were officially 30 white families in Westerly and Westerly became the first township in the State of Rhode Island.

Since those early days, Westerly has continued to thrive. Many changes have taken place in it's size, industry, economy and politics. The history of this town is rich in culture and tradition, pride and enthusiasm.
